BLOG: SaY gets subhead in Courier-Journal article

Jeffrey Lee Puckett gave SaY a shout-out recently in his column. Puckett is a Louisville Courier-Journal entertainment and music columnist. He does reviews and is doing something pretty cool now, where he recommends digital downloads. SaY got a subhead at the bottom of his column, and while we’re talking shocking, enjoy this Street Sweeper Social Club song (easily the worst song on the album).

Street Sweeper Social Club - Shock You Again

SaY has also been in a few smaller newspapers, like the Middlesboro Daily News - yeah, I didn’t care either.

Shocking new Web site

As a proud Kentuckian and longtime music fan, Brad Luttrell has spent the last few years thinking about a Web site that could combine those interests and, ideally, a few others.

He’s found it with Shock and Yawn Magazine, an online magazine that covers all music but has a special fondness for any from the Southern regions. He launched the site June 29 at www.shockandyawn.com. It looks slick and is user-friendly, although the content is a little thin because of its youth.

Luttrell is a native of Harlan and a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he was an editor, photographer, writer and designer for the school newspaper, the Kentucky Kernal. Shock and Yawn will favor Kentucky music, including new and unsigned bands, but any located south of the Ohio River and more or less east of the Mississippi are fair game.

Eventually, the site will contain reviews of bands, albums, music venues and even bars. Bands can commence begging Luttrell for coverage by e-mailing him at brad@shockandyawn.com.

Every Saturday Jeffrey Lee Puckett recommends digital music. His album reviews appear in Friday’s Weekend section. Online: Questions? Go to courier-journal.com/puckett.

Advocating a point: We are not Rage Against the Machine

Street Sweeper Social Club is Tom Morello, left, and Boots Riley.

Street Sweeper Social Club is Tom Morello, left, and Boots Riley.

If Tom Morello ventures into a new project, it will be compared to Rage Against the Machine.

Audioslave was anticipated to be a hybrid of Soundgarden and RATM, but few songs ever achieved the energy of a RATM ballad, or the political meaning. But lead singer Chris Cornell never wanted it to be political, and after his most recent album, one doesn’t have to wonder why Audioslave had a soft, pop side, as seen in tracks such as “Be yourself,” “Doesn’t remind me,” and “I am the highway.”

Nix the Cornell and add a Raymond “Boots” Riley, however, you get Street Sweeper Social Club, and there is zero chance of a mysterious and existential pop song, and twice the opportunity for advocacy and activism.

Political lyrics. Heavy and choppy slams of distorted guitar. Music that makes you want to just punch a yuppie in the face and set his BMW on fire.

Wait, is Street Sweeper Social Club the new Rage Against the machine?

Street Sweeper Social Club just e-mailed blasted fans their “100 Little Curses” video. It’s not recommended for those who wear DolceGabbana, drive $100,000 cars and live on Rodeo Drive.

Boots Riley, vocals for the group, posted on his Twitter, “No-StreetSweeperSocialClub isn’t the new RATM.We’re the new Sly&TheFamilyStone. With a plan,” referring to Tom Morello’s previous group, Rage Against the Machine.

SSSC’s sound does have characteristics of RATM, which is expected because of Morello’s choppy, distorted style of guitar play and vocalist Riley’s political nature (Zack de la Rocha was extremely political). Riley’s work with his hip-hop group The Coup often shows political themes - the 2006 album “Pick a bigger weapon” was almost entirely anti-government ballads.

The video was directed by Matthew Stawski. SSSC is on tour with Nine Inch Nails at the moment with Jane’s Addiction on the NINJA tour.

But SSSC wont let fans down - this is not RATM.
