KY’s Jim James and Daniel Martin Moore sing out about mountain top removal

Just utter the word “coal,” and emotions flare, hotter and higher than the flames the black rock generates when burned for energy.
The supporters of coal mining fight back against the environmentalists, saying coal provides jobs and useful flat land in the impoverished Eastern Kentucky, while the anti-coal activists say the technology is readily available for a switch to green energy, and that we are destroying our environment.
Two Kentucky songwriters are coming together to help make their voices heard. Jim James, or Yim Yames as he is calling himself outside of his best-known band, My Morning Jacket, and Sub Pop’s pop-folk artist Daniel Martin Moore will be performing a show in support of Kentuckians for the Commonwealth’s effort to stop mountain top removal.

Phantom Family Halo’s new album dark, courageous

Louisville's The Phantom Family Halo has a new album out that will eat your soul.
The Phantom Family Halo’s new album is so diabolic and dark that even Glenn Danzig’s skin would crawl after pressing Play. Guitars that slice like razorblades across a throat. Vocals and lyrics that make your bones cold. Hypnotizing subliminal messages. One might wonder if this family is related to the Mansons.
“Monoliths and These Flowers Never Die” isn’t for the weak minded, or even the faint hearted. This courageous album isn’t afraid of social conviction, or, apparently, eternal damnation. This album is experimental, psychedelic rock as it should be – fearless.
Opening with a hauntingly vindictive track, “Blackouts and Runaways” is as captivating as it is terrifying. Guitars that hum like chainsaws sync with the sound of a bass rhythm that will keep you awake at night. If you survive the first track, you will likely know if The Phantom Family Halo is for you or not.

Did you see the video for “Satellite Skin” by Modest Mouse? Sure, it’s not new, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy it. Watch it.
Q & A with Louisville’s new band, Karass
Karass, a new Louisville band, recently gave away their entire album online for free. Self-described as electroacoustic, experimental rock, the group is made up of Chris Kincaid, Greg Ward, Josh Claxton. They have a few upcoming shows, click here to see those.
Recently, SaY caught up with Karass to see what they were all about. The conversation involves cheap beer, Kurt Vonnegut, and the hilarity of how some of Karass’ lyricless songs develop names.

SaY What: Monsters of Folk, Bon Iver, Thom Yorke
A few stories you might have misse, but probably shouldn’t have
Monsters of Folk bringing Halloween to the Louisville Palace. SaY published ticket prices and release detaisl on the Oct. 31 show for the new supergroup. Check it out.
Bon Iver and Thom Yorke confirmed to do wimpy vampire movie. It seemed, at first, a bit optimistic that Thom Yorke would write music for a teeny-popper, wimpy vampire movie, but consider him flesh and blood in the “Twilight” crew. Oh, and add Bon Iver to that dark mix. Click here for SaY’s story.
New Cymbals Eat Guitars MP3. Matt Jordan posted this story yesterday on his blog, You Ain’t No Picasso. Click here to download it, and read his thoughts.
SaY What: Dumpster diving and a Louisville block party
A few stories you might have missed, but probably shouldn’t have
Big names, in the music and clothing industry. The New York Times released a portrait series of artists from the 10th annual Coachella Music Festival modeling clothing. Unzip the link here.
Louisville Block Party on Tuesday. There’s talk of a live band, but there is definitely funnel cake. Hope over to Consuming Louisville to check out the details of who, what, where and why.
Dumpster diving is actually socially acceptable in New York. A group has turned a few dumpsters into swimming pools in New York City, and they got the idea from Curtis Crowe, a musician in the Athens band Pylon, who made his own. Get that dirt here.
New Louisville band giving album away

Abraham Lincoln likely downloaded his copy of Karass' album for free, and copied it over to casette for his boombox.
