BLOG: Jonathan Tyler & Co. shred to small crowd

Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights shredded an awesome blues performance last night at Buster's.

First – Buster’s is an amazing music venue.

Second – It helps that my first show there was a band that could absolutely shred some blues.

I’ve lived in Memphis, Tenn. for about six months now, and I haven’t heard blues sound so good as last night at Buster’s. Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights, hailing from Dallas, Texas, has all the right components to make up a true blues team, Kenny Wayne Shepherd style.

With two solid guitar players, exchanging lead and rhythm like a football pass, a bass player who can jam his own lead and a drummer who is as sick as his beard is long, they are the perfect team.

Heavy Pets scare up good vibrations at Scarendipity

Heavy Pets

The Heavy Pets has the Halloween show down. Click more to see where the group is jamming this year.

With his face aglow from the glare of a plastic jack-o’-lantern, Jeff Lloyd fingered the neck of the guitar as his right arm lay limp by his side. His mouth agape and eyes half opened, Lloyd stood surrounded by his friends, known as The Heavy Pets.

Out of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., this group of five friends is hitting it big on the jam band circuit as they combine elements of jazz, funk, rock and reggae into an energetic blended sound. For the past few years, they have hit up some of the biggest festivals including Moe.Down, Langerado, SXSW and Bonnaroo where they played a pre-Phish set. They have played over 440 shows since forming in 2006.

Richard Johnston a must-see for Memphis

It’s Friday night, and you’re on Beale Street in Memphis. If you come in the most popular entrance you’re going to notice all of the popular stops: B.B. King’s Club, three or four Elvis look-a-likes, and Blues City Cafe. There will be the traditional Memphis-style blues and ribs, and for every rib eaten and blues note played, you get a dozen tourist.

But walk two blocks East, and the scene changes. You are likely to see a few real Memphians, and there is a decent chance you’re going to hear blues music you have never heard before.

And since it’s Friday (or even Saturday), it’s quite possible one of the best bands on the Eastern end of Beale Street is playing. Complete with bluesy guitar, bass, drums and vocals, Richard Johnston stops the crowd in their tracks.

That’s because he is the guitar. The drums. The bass. And of course, the voice. Johnston is a one-man-band that has one of the fullest sounds on Beale.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - There was a buzz coming from the audience as the sun went down at the Botanic Gardens, where concerts are really more like dinner and a show than just a stage and a performer. Strings of white light bulbs hung from tree to tree, giving some light over hundreds of tables, covered with expensive wines, homemade food and candles, all brought in by the crowd.

At first glance, this did not seem to be a concert at all, but maybe some kind of fundraiser, or fancy picnic with a fireworks show. But in only a few minutes, the legendary Joe Cocker, once known for his drug and drinking problems, would take the stage.

Get your beer early and find your seat because this show is not waiting for you

You know the type. The ones who come into the concert late, making all kinds of fuss, spilling beer all over you and your date. They end up being as much a part of a show as the band was supposed to be. But why not be that guy? Showing up late, just to see the main act instead of three other bands you never heard of.

Well, one reason might be that you’re going to a Counting Crows concert.

Adam Duritz posted to the Counting Crows’ Web site a statement letting fans know that if they try to pull such a stunt, they’ll miss a considerably cool part of the show.

“I know you’re all used to showing up at 8:30 or 9 p.m. for concerts that started at 7,” Duritz’s statement said. “It’s understandable. You’re there to see your band and you’re showing up when you think they’re gonna play, right? Well, starting on Thursday July 16 at Marymoor Amphitheatre in Redmond, Washington, that’s all going to change.”
